Ellien Laramee-Byers and I have co-curated a second sketchbook show, building on the successes of last year’s popular show. Once again, we have artists from around the country, as well as many from our own ‘hood here in Somerville. The show features sketchbooks, process drawings, and studies from artists, utilizing a broad range of materials and techniques.

Gary taping cat The work of poet and artist Gary Hawkins, who works with washi tape in his writing and sketch journals, inspired us to create a three-person collaborative wall drawing in the Nave Annex entry hallway. Gary was generous enough to join us from North Carolina and we had a blast further expanding our own notions of sketching.

On a personal note, creating the wall drawing for the Sketchbook Show 2016 was a fulfillment of a long-standing wish of mine. Working with Ellien and Gary just made it even better. As always, I am deeply indebted to the Nave Gallery and Susan Berstler for making shows like this possible in Somerville.
